Abby Paris of More Than Futbol returned to Belize to run a Summer Soccer Camp for the children of San Mateo. The Summer Soccer Camp ran from late June to early August and a total of 60 children attended at least part of the camp with an average of 20 a day.
The children had a wonderful time learning new soccer skills, teamwork and playing organized games against each other.
At the halfway point of the camp three players were awarded for their participation and all the students were invited to see the Pele movie.
At the end of the camp the top three players were awarded, and Paradice Ice-cream donated ice-cream for all the players.
Coach Abby organized the camp as she wanted to have a fun and positive activity available to the youth of the island during the long summer break, especially for the boys who can otherwise find themselves bored and are more vulnerable to negative social influences.
The soccer camp follows on from More Than Futbol’s week long after school soccer program each January and their first soccer league set up last winter, and is part of a larger vision to form sustainable soccer league for the kids on the island. More than Futbol also run an empowerment program for the older students at the school, encouraging them to create goals for their future and practical steps to achieve them.
The camp will continue on weekends during the month of August under the guidance of Jose and Moses, a couple of San Mateo locals.
